Karen was born on July 4, 1942, in Grinnell, the daughter of Lee and Doris "Madge" Rice Pickens. She was raised in Grinnell and attended school in Grinnell.

On August 26, 1961, she was united in marriage with Richard John Puls, at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Grinnell and she operated a day care center in home for 30 years while raising her four children. For many years, Karen and Dick were also foster parents to 35 children!

Karen was a devoted wife and mother and loved sharing her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and held a passion for decorating her home inside and out for all the holidays and cooking for the holidays, too. Her hobbies included craft-work and decorating wedding ceremonies. She enjoyed camping and sitting by the campfire sharing her favorite childhood stories and singing songs with her family and friends. Attending the Iowa State Fair and hosting family reunions were especially fun. She always said she was a "lousy bowler" but she loved to bowl and held a passion for the game! She always looked forward to tournament play.

Karen was a member of the Lady Elks and Eagles Auxiliary in Grinnell.

She is survived by her husband, Dick of Grinnell; four children, Derek (Denise) Puls of Saginaw, Texas, Kelle (Ron Moulds) Martin of Grinnell, Kirk (Becky) Puls of Lewisville, Texas and Troy Puls of Grinnell; two brothers, Kenneth Pickens of Crestview, Florida and Patrick Pickens of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho; nine grandchildren, Lauren Puls, Joshua (Rachel) Van Ersvelde, Mandie Martin, Eric (Ana) Puls, Victoria Puls, Brianna (Mitchell) Ziebol, Corey Puls, Dustin (Brittany) Puls and Teal (Henry) Puls; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Sandra Adams.
