He was the second child born two years to the day after his older brother Jim was born. After high school, Virgil attended Purdue University, graduated with a B.A. degree in Mechanical Engineering and in 1960, started working for Sinclair Oil Company. Virgil and Clara met, fell in love, and were married on April 16, 1960. Their first home was an apartment in an old brownstone in Chicago, Illinois. Their daughter Renee was born on July 2, 1961, and their twin boys, Steven and Stuart, were born on April 11, 1964. They lived in and around Chicago until Virgil transferred to Houston Texas. That started a number of transfers which ended them up in Los Angeles California. Upon their retirement, they moved to Grinnell, Iowa so Clara could be close to her ailing brother. While living in Grinnell, Virgil took the training necessary to become a licensed local pastor and served the Malcom and Sheridan United Methodist Churches while their pastor went to seminary to become ordained. In 2000, they moved to Lake Ponderosa and in 2013, they moved back to Grinnell and lived in the Seeland Park area. Throughout his time in Iowa, Virgil has been active in helping people in need while helping them feel the love of God in their daily lives. His aim was always to be the hands of Christ in his community. Virgil is survived by his wife, Clara; daughter, Renee (Trevor) Feltner of Houston, Texas; sons, Steven (Carol) Scott of Grinnell and Stuart (Keri) Scott of Montezuma, Iowa; two grandchildren, Danielle (Marc) Holsonback of Corpus Christi, Texas and Christopher (Toshia) Scott of Brooklyn, Iowa; and five great grandchildren. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and his brother.
