Terry Peters, 72, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, October 19, 2014, in North Richland Hills, Texas.
A celebration of Terry's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 8, 2014, at the Grinnell Christian Church. Interment will be at a later date.
Should friends desire, memorials in Terry's name may be directed to either the Shriner's Hospital for Children or to the Des Moines Y Camp and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Terry was born on December 24, 1941, in Carroll, Iowa to Donald and Margery Peters. He was raised in Glidden, Iowa and graduated valedictorian from Glidden High School with the Class of 1960. While participating in sports at Glidden High School he set state and local records in track and football and was also a member of the basketball team. He later received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa followed by a master's degree from Northeast Missouri State and post graduate work at Iowa State University.
On December 28, 1963, he was married to Katharine Hueffner. Terry began his career as a teacher in Ames, Iowa and later moved to Adair, Iowa, where he served as a school principal in the Adair School District. In 1974, the family moved to Grinnell and he served 27 years in the Grinnell-Newburg School District. During his career in Grinnell he was a principal at Davis Elementary and later worked as the Assistant Superintendent of the school district.
He was a member of the Grinnell Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Lodge and the Eagles Club. He enjoyed golf and served as President of the Grinnell Golf and Country Club for two terms. Terry enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Kathy Peters of Grinnell; one daughter, Cristy (Dave) Toney of Colleyville, Texas, one son, David (Ninotchka) Peters of Katy, Texas; four grandchildren, Rachel Toney of Houston, Texas, Renee Toney of College Station, Texas, Douglas Peters of Boulder, Colorado, and Grant Peters of Katy, Texas; one brother, Randy (Shirley) Peters of Cleghorn, Iowa; and three sisters, Jerilyn (Jerry) Tryon of Carroll, Iowa, Diane (Gary) Dee of San Diego, California and Deb (Paul) Gray of Dallas, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Margery Peters.
