Reginald 'Bill' Scurr, 90, of Grinnell and formerly of Gilman died Friday November 3, 2006, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell. Funeral service for Mr. Scurr will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with Rev. John Saxton of the Mayflower, officiating. Pallbearers will be Chad Anthony, Jim Buitendorp, Grant Ferguson, Blake, Clayton, Harry, Joe, and Steve Scurr. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to service time. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mayflower Human Needs Fund. The son of Joseph Harry and Ida Eunice Clark Scurr, Bill was born May 6, 1916, in Gilman. He was raised on the family farm and was a 1933 graduate of Gilman High School. He attended Iowa State University and received a B.A. degree from St. Olaf College. He later received a MLS degree from University of Chicago Library Science and had taken 96 hours of graduate study towards his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He had made his home in Iowa City for several years and later moved to Chicago in the late 1940's. While in Chicago, he held several professional positions with the University of Chicago and later Chicago Public Library including, Chief, Humanities Department and Chief, Literature and Philosophy Division. Following his retirement, he returned in 1980, to the family farm in Gilman. He moved to the Mayflower Home in 2002. Bill was a member of the Illinois and American Library Association and served on various ALA committees. He was Advertising manager of the Illinois Library Association from 1956 to 1958 and had contributed many articles to several professional journals. Survivors include one nephew and his wife, Harry and Janet Scurr of Gilman; five great nieces and nephews; eleven great-great nieces and nephews, and a great-great-great niece and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Susan and Opal Scurr; one brother, J. Clark Scurr; and one niece, Nancy Buitendorp.
