Obituary

JoAnn M. Schneekloth, 84, of West Des Moines and formerly of Malcom, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Manor Care Center in West Des Moines with her daughters and granddaughters at her side. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 11, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Jon Gaul, pastor of the New Hope United Methodist Church, officiating. Casket Bearers will be Mike, Tim and Jeff Schneekloth and Jerry and John Axmear and Perry Fenner. Honorary Bearers will be Dennis "Bud" Maschmann, Dale McCammant, Dennis Plants, John Myers, Howard Samek, Richard Rohrer, Harry Smith,Byron Kasa, Mike Manly, Erica Sholley and Abigayle Dunn. Interment will be at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning 12:00 p.m. on Sunday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Should friends desire, memorials in her name may be directed to the University of the Iowa Department of Ophthalmology or to the Malcom Fire Department and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. JoAnn Marie Bergman was born on Monday, October 16, 1933, in State Center, Iowa to Dwight "Dude" and Bernice Harrendorf Bergman. She was raised on the family farm, attended rural school and graduated with the Class of 1951 from State Center High School. She also attended Grinnell College and Drake University. On August 4, 1957, she was united in marriage to Lester "Sonny" Schneekloth in State Center and to this union was born two daughters, Linda and Brenda. The couple made their home in Malcom, where JoAnn worked for the Postal Service and retired as Postmaster after 40 years of service. JoAnn was a member of the Malcom United Methodist Church and played the organ and piano for many church services, weddings and funerals. She was also an avid booster of the Iowa Athletic Department and was a member of the University President's Club. She enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, baking pies, dining out and attending her grandchildren's sporting, church and school activities. She also attended many St. Louis Cardinal baseball games and was a season ticket holder to Iowa Hawkeye football, men's and women's basketball, softball and wresting events. Survivors include her two daughters, Linda Miller and Brenda (Tim) McCulley, all of Urbandale; and two granddaughters, Lindsey (Seth) McClellan of Waukee and Tara McCulley of Urbandale. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her son-in-law, Jack Miller and one grandson, Matthew McCulley.
