On June 29, 1947 he was united in marriage to Bernice Irene Lee at the Newburg Congregational Church. Lee farmed near Gilman from 1947 until 1973, when they moved to a farm near Malcom, Iowa. Lee retired from farming in 1993. They moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 2018.

Lee was active in several community organizations including the SEMCO School Board, Poweshiek County Cattleman Association, Poweshiek County Farm Bureau, and Poweshiek Mutual Insurance. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn.

Lee, Bernice and the family enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and visiting family in North Carolina and Norway. On their 65th wedding anniversary the family spent the weekend at the Linden House in Lynnville, Iowa. In 1982, they hosted an AFS student, Michelle Blake, from South Africa. Lee and Bernice enjoyed camping at the Iowa State Fair.
