Kenneth D. Patterson, 89, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at his home. A service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at Our Silent City Cemetery near Kellogg with Pastor Miles Grismore officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. A reception will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Grinnell following the service. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Kellogg Volunteer Fire Department and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Kenneth was born on January 5, 1926, in Mingo, Iowa to Russell and Rose Schultz Patterson. He was raised in Mingo and attended Mingo and Colfax schools. In June of 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was stationed in Germany following World War II. During that time he worked on P-47 Thunderbolt fighters airplanes. On February 13, 1949, he was married to Evelyn Scarbough in Kellogg, Iowa. The couple lived in Germany and became the parents of three children, Mike, Roy and Gail. Kenneth served his country during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. The couple made their home at various military bases throughout the United States until his discharge in 1969. They moved to Spokane, Washington, where he worked for the Comet Corporation and later the Sprague Pest Control Company. They moved to Grinnell in 2000. Kenneth was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Grinnell, the American Legion and the Air Force Sergeants Association. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and traveling. Survivors include his children, Mike (Jane) Patterson of Kellogg, Roy (Debbie) Patterson of Post Falls, ID and Gail (Ron) Clark of Grinnell; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother, Donald Patterson of Newton; and three sisters, Doris Patterson and Loise Chapman, both of Newton, and Jane Grimm of Colfax. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one sister, Julia Leitzinger; and two brothers, Ralph and Raymond Patterson.
