Gene Broders, 85, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Sheridan Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 8 p.m., Monday, April 1, 2013, and the family will be present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday evening.

Gene was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1927, in Sheridan Township, Iowa to Elmer H. and Mae Lena Schultz Broders. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1945 and went to Wartburg College. In 1956, Gene received his BA in History. On May 5, 1957, he was married to Shirley Airhart at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell.
He worked at several places throughout his life; Eisenman Motors in Grinnell until 1980, maintenance for the City of Grinnell, a bartender at Grinnell Golf and Country Club and a courier for the Grinnell Herald Register. Gene was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell and part of the Autumn Leaves Church Group.
Gene enjoyed camping and fishing with his family and friends. He was an avid reader. For 20 years, they square danced! Gene played pool throughout his life and most recently with the other pool players at Seeland Park.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Broders of Grinnell; two sons, Robin (Betty) Broders of Grinnell, Kevin (Kim) Broders of Clive; four grandchildren, Raymond Broders, Frederick Broders, Nicholas Miller and Michael Miller; two great grandchildren, Treden Miller and Giovanna Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Warren Broders, Merle Broders and Russell Broders, in infancy.
