Bill Lohse, 72, of Grinnell died October 1, 2010, at his home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Organist will be Marilyn Kriegel. Pallbearers will be Dave Danforth, Paul Frascht, Dustin, Ryan, and Tyrel Lohse, and Jim, Joe and Wayne Wax. Honorary bearers will be Gordon Ashby, Dean Douglas, Kenny Kramer, Richard Lohse and Jerry Reid. A family burial will be held at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bill Lohse Memorial Fund Bill was born December 16, 1937, in Anthon, Iowa, the son of Adolph and Lillian Zeglin Lohse. He grew up in Sioux City and Climbing Hill, Iowa and was a 1956 graduate of Sioux City East. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. On September 2, 1957, he was united in marriage to Sharon Rae Miller, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Springfield, Missouri, Sioux City, and Kansas City, Missouri while he was employed with Kresge Department Store. In 1964, they moved to Grinnell and he operated the Ben Franklin Store until 1967. He then began working for Maytag in the porcelain and later maintenance departments and retired after 25 plus years on May 31, 1992. During that time period he also was employed on Saturdays at the Varsity News Stand in Grinnell. While retired, Bill was very devoted to caring for his ailing wife, who was diagnosed with cancer, until her death in 1994. He also did small jobs as a handyman in the Grinnell area. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was active with the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed working the chili suppers and fish fries. He was also a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club and Elks Lodge and was very active with the Boy Scouts and Explorer's Post. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and was always interested in his family's activities. He was considered independent and strong-willed, yet laid back. He loved to socialize with family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and golfing and was active in several leagues. He also enjoyed woodworking, playing cribbage, and working in his vegetable garden. He could prepare a variety of menus with his home raised tomatoes and was considered a good cook. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Survivors include four children, Cindy (Wayne) Wax of Joliet, Illinois, Dale and Kurt of Grinnell, and David (Michelle) of Spirit Lake, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Nicole (Brian) Poling, Joseph (Maggie) Wax, Dustin, Jennifer, Tyrel, Ryan, Kayla, and Eric Lohse; and three great-grandchildren, Alexander and Brian Poling and Sebastian Wax. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Charlie, Robert, and one in infancy; and a daughter-in-law, Tracy M. Lohse.
