William Eugene Smith, 78, of Barstow, California, and of Brooklyn and Malcom, Iowa, died Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at a later date. Bill was born on April 13, 1936, to Pearley and Bernice Story Smith in Montezuma, Iowa. He raised in Malcom and graduated from Malcom High School. Bill married Sammie Marie Myers on January 1, 1962 and to this union, two daughters were born; Teresa and Paula. The couple later divorced. On August 17, 1974, he married Dora Marjorie Smith in Reno, Nevada. The couple resided in California. Bill served his country as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. He did two tours in Vietnam, receiving several awards; three good conduct medals, a combat action ribbon, a national defense medal, a Vietnam service medal, a Vietnam campaign medal, a meritorious unit citation and a Presidential unit citation. Bill retired from the Navy on August 15, 1974. He was a proud member of the Pipefitters Plumbers Local Union 228 and the Malcom American Legion. He enjoyed telling stories, music and his carpentry work. Bill never met a stranger. He was a collector of many things and always had an appetite for pastries. Bill always had time to fish and gamble, especially playing poker. His greatest love, pride and joy, was his family. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Teresa (Bill) Simonton of Malcom, Iowa and Paula Grimm of Brooklyn, Iowa; two step children, Lea Ursry and Don Pare of Barstow, California; seven grandchildren, Ashley Stevens, Ryan Grimm, Kali Smith, Jeffrey Ursry, Leadora Escobosa, Eddie Ursry and Jeremy Ursry; twelve great grandchildren, Andrea Elliott, Josue Montes, Angel Montes, Aaron Ursry, Triston Ursry, Emily Ursry, Jacob Ursry, Jeremy Ursry Jr. Erica Larrson, Hanna Gutierrez and Haylei Gutierrez,; two brothers, Jim Smith of Story City, Iowa and Earl "Buzz" Smith of Marion, Iowa; many wonderful sisters-in-law, Sheryl Smith, Mamie Smith, Sherry Smith, Phyllis Smith and Josie Smith and several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Dora; one sister, Darlene and her husband, Lyman "Barney" McDowell; and three brothers, Jerry Smith, Keith Smith and Jack Smith and one great granddaughter, Jayden Marjorie Ursry.
