Wayne Coats, 61, of Victor, Iowa died on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 in Metolius, Oregon. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor with Rev. Michael Kolesar officiating. The family requests for those attending the service to dress casually. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 9:00 am. Private family burial will follow the service in the Coats Family Cemetery north of Victor. Live streaming of Wayne's service will begin at 9:50 am on the Smith Funeral Home Facebook page. Memories and condolences may be shared with Wayne's family online at www.smithfh.com. Wayne Noel Coats was born on July 29, 1959 in Marengo, Iowa to Richard Allen Coats and Lillian Rose (Buhr) Coats. He grew up on the family farm north of Victor and graduated from HLV High School. Following his education, he began farming with his father, Richard Coats. Wayne developed a fondness for Oregon after he traveled there with a friend following his high school graduation and worked for his uncles. He continued to travel to Oregon almost every year to work and visit family, and eventually bought a place to live in Metolius. Wayne managed a cow/calf herd along with a hay business for many years. On his journeys across the country, he met and made many friends that he would visit whenever he passed through their area. He loved going to pawn ships and auctions to buy and sell antique guns. His enjoyments were hunting, trapping, and socializing at coffee shops and bars. Wayne is survived by his siblings, Patricia (Duane) Hinrichs of Brooklyn, IA, Debra (Stewart) Maas of Marengo, IA, Lanette (Scott) Van Nevel of Terrebonne, OR, and Dave (Tara) Coats of Victor; stepmother, Bernice Coats; stepsister, LuAnn Bohan; stepbrother, Jerry Everett; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Derek Maas; and stepbrother, Jim Everett.
