Obituary

Wayne Callison, 74, of Grinnell died on Saturday, August 26, 2006, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Tim Stewart, pastor of the Grinnell First Baptist Church, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen McCune and vocalist will be Lisa Henderson. A private family burial will be held at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg with the Rev. Susan Leathem, Grinnell Regional Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Wayne Callison Memorial Fund. The son of Joseph Ross and Myrtle Benson Callison, he was born November 1, 1931, in Kellogg. He was raised in Kellogg and received his education in the Kellogg School District. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. On December 26, 1951, he was married to Oda Elizabeth Anderson in Bad Axe, Michigan. The couple lived in England while he served in the United States Air Force. They returned to the United States in 1955 and settled in Monroe, Iowa until the fall of 1956 when they moved to Grinnell. Wayne worked a variety of jobs including Moorman's Feed, Grinnell Police Department, as a deputy sheriff with Poweshiek County, and with Van Wyk Freight Line. He also was employed with Ma & Pa Stores, Macy's Concrete, Manatt's Inc. and later Grinnell-Newburg School District. He was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge. Survivors include his children, Larry (Mary) Callison of Monroe, Louisiana, Shirley (Dr. Scott) Jensen of Grinnell, Doug (Rhonda) Callison of Oskaloosa, Kristy (Richard) Lilly of Johnston, and Corrie (Paul) Vlaencic of Appleton, Wisconsin; one brother, Dale Callison of Norfolk, Virginia; four sisters, Judy Parsons of Newton, Norma Jean Fanning of Kellogg, Karen Cummings of Bridgeport, Nebraska, and Reva Baer of Edgewood, New Mexico; eleven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
