Walter was born the son of John Edward Meyer and Elva H. Lichtenberger on February 13, 1924, in rural Marion County, Indiana near Indianapolis. The family moved to rural Laurel, Iowa in 1934, and he attended country schools near his home. He graduated with the Gilman High School Class of 1942. Following his education, Walter worked at a dairy farm near Clutier, Iowa and then at Fruehauf Manufacturing in Center Point, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Dorotha Lucile James on December 27, 1947, at the First Christian Church in Montezuma, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Carol, Norman and Kevin. The family moved near Montezuma and Walter began his life-long career of dairy farming. Walter was a member of the West Liberty Church of Christ near Montezuma, a former member of the First Christian Church in Montezuma and the Christian Church in Center Point, and attended Grandview Church of Christ in Urbandale, Iowa. He was a former member of Farm Bureau throughout his career as a dairy farmer. Walter was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and tending to his garden. His other enjoyments included listening and dancing to polka music, cooking and he was especially known for making candy, ice cream and pies, and for his humility and his faith in the Lord. Walter is survived by his children, Carol (Del) Shores of Urbandale, IA, Norman (Rhonda) Meyer of Montezuma, IA, and Kevin (Angela) Meyer of Omaha, NE; 5 grandchildren, Rona Skow of Newton, IA, Heather (Paul) Brown of Iwakuni, Japan, Amanda (Mike) Meyer-Smith of Newton, IA, Matthew (Elizabeth) Meyer of Omaha, NE; 2 step grandchildren, Chad and Brian Shores; 6 great grandchildren, Stevie Skow of Newton, Nathan Skow-Butler of Newton, Brooklyn Mallicoat of Newton, Meradith, Taylor and Nina Brown of Iwakuni, Japan; 6 step great grandchildren, Austin, Devin, Libby, Jerney, Megan, Layna Shores; a brother, Clyde Meyer of Monticello, IA; and sisters, Helen White of Kerrville, TX, and Verna Mae Burrichter of Cedar Rapids, IA. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dortha on August 9, 2001; and a grandson, Curtis Meyer on October 8, 1975. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Walter E.
