Vivian was born May 7, 1923, in Blockton, Iowa to Cecil D. and Vera Gail (Hoffman) Judy. They moved to Grinnell in 1926, where her father worked at the Spaulding Washing Machine Company. Vivian attended Parker Elementary School and graduated from Grinnell High School in the mid-term class of 1941. As a youth during the depression, she was very active in Campfire Girls and music; she became a member of Grinnell High's first marching band and won state honors with her bassoon. A music scholarship in her name is awarded annually to a GHS graduate.
On October 5, 1942, she married her childhood sweetheart, John Hill Craig. While he served in the US Navy during World War II, Vivian proudly worked at a defense plant near Des Moines. After the war they returned to Grinnell and raised their family. Vivian owned and operated a knit shop in her home for many years. In 1968 she and John moved to Oakland Acres, where she worked in the pro shop.
John passed away in 1987, and in 2004, Vivian moved to a duplex at Seeland Park in Grinnell. In addition to her lifelong knitting hobby, Vivian remained active in Campfire Girls and was an avid reader, bridge player and loved crossword puzzles. She thoroughly enjoyed the game of golf, always 'looking for a game' and was a stickler for the rules. She cherished her many friends of all ages and was comforted by the love of her ever-growing family. Vivian will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, keen sense of humor and lovely smile.
Survivors include her son John (Sonja) of Salem, Oregon, her daughter Judy (Jerry) Van Wechel of Vancouver, Washington, her daughter Martha Devine of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and her son Tim of Littleton, Colorado; her ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John in 1987; and her infant sister, Clyda Belle.
