Viola Sleeuwenhook, age 93, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at Windsor Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Matt Oleson, Newburg-Chester Congregational Church officiating. Pallbearers will be Jason and Justin Halverson, Jeff Renaud, Dirk and Lynn Sleeuwenhoek and Todd Weaver. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home and her family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church or to Grinnell Regional Hospice, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Viola was born on May 1, 1923, in rural Gilman, Iowa to Howard Calvin and Lottie Blanche (Adams) Weaver. The family lived in the Gilman and Newburg area. Viola graduated from Gilman High School in 1942. She was a member of the class of 1941 but contracted Rheumatic fever in her senior year and was forced to finish her senior year in 1942. On May 9, 1943, she married Earl Raymond Sleeuwenhoek in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple settled in the Newburg area and began farming. Viola was a member of the Newburg-Chester Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, Church treasurer and an active member of the Women's Fellowship until she was no longer able to serve. She loved sewing animals for the hospital during the winter. She was the treasurer for that group for many years. She was always known for her potato salad. Viola also was an assistant 4-H leader. She found a passion of building furniture and after purchasing a farm full of walnut trees, she and Earl turned them into many treasured clocks and pieces of furniture. After many years on the farm southeast of Newburg, they moved to Grinnell in 1990. Flowers then became her passion and you could always see her love in her flowers. As the grandchildren grew up, she enjoyed the company they supplied dropping in for lunch during their days at work. They always knew grandma would have some sort of snack for them. Just stopping by to see if she needed a light bulb changed or something moved. Viola moved to Windsor Manor in Grinnell on April 20, 2016. Survivors include her daughter, Jean Halverson and husband Gary, three grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, Jessica, Jeff , Marissa Jeanelle and Calli Leann Renaud, Jason, Samantha and Oliver Earl Halverson, and Justin Halverson and fiance Erin Lindsay; and one brother, Donald Weaver. Viola went to be with Jesus on September 4, 2016, at Windsor Manor in Grinnell. She was 93 years of age, and was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Lottie Weaver; her husband of 60 years, Earl Sleeuwenhoek; and two brothers, Delbert and Doyle Weaver.
