Obituary

Vernon Koehn, age 85 of Victor, died on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A public funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, November 23, 2020 at St James Lutheran Church in Victor with Rev. Michael Kolesar officiating. A face mask will be required for those attending the service. Live streaming of the funeral service will begin at 9:45 am on the Smith Funeral Home and Cremation Service Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SmithFuneralHomeCremationService. Interment with military honors will follow at Victor Memorial Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 restrictions limiting funeral receptions, no reception will be held. A public visitation will be held from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the family will not be present, and the visitation will be limited to 15 people at a given time. A face mask will be required for those attending the visitation. Memorials may be designated to St. James Lutheran Church and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 485, Victor, IA 52347. Memories and condolences may be shared with Vernon's family online at www.smithfh.com. Vernon Louis Koehn was born the son of Louis and Esther (Schafbuch) Koehn on March 1, 1935 in Victor, Iowa. He was raised in Victor and graduated from Victor High School with the class of 1952. He attended the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines. Vernon honorably served his country in the United States Army as an aviation mechanic at Ft. Devens Army Base in Massachusetts from 1952 until 1954. He married the love of his life, Kae Lavonne Read on February 23, 1955 at the United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, Iowa. The couple lived in Ft. Devens, Massachusetts and moved to Victor in 1956. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Stephanie, Stephen, Shawn, and Shelly. Vernon owned and operated Koehn Motor Company in Victor for over 40 years, earning Ford's highest national customer service honor "The President's Award" year after year. The couple were longtime members of St. James Lutheran Church in Victor. Vernon held a strong love of his family and his faith was steadfast. He loved to sing his beloved Lutheran Hymns while sitting in the same pew every Sunday. He had a deep desire to lead others to faith even in his final hours on this earth. As a pillar of the Victor community, Vernon strived to make it a better place to live and thrive. He enjoyed living the country life and had a special love of horses. Some of Vernon's enjoyments were attending Bible study at St. James Lutheran Church, going roller skating and dancing with Kae, playing Euchre with family and friends, drawing, riding his tractor to tend to snow and yards, watching western movies, Iowa Hawkeye games and auto races. Vernon is survived by his children, Stephanie (Tom) Thul of Clear Lake, IA, Stephen (Connie) Koehn of Montezuma, IA, Shawn (Judy) Koehn of West Des Moines, IA, and Shelly (Hud) Smith of Dallas Center, IA; sister-in-law, Sherry Lawson of Greenville, SC; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, a nephew and numerous nieces, all of whom were very special to Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kae Koehn in 2000; sister, Darlene Smith; brother-in-law, Gene Smith; brother-in-law, Lee Lawson, and nephews, Kevin Lawson and Brian Smith.
