Obituary

Tom O. Hoskins, 55, of Cedar Rapids, died suddenly on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 13, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell. Interment will be held privately by the family at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorials may be directed to the Tom O. Hoskins Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Tom was born on October 13, 1958, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Harold H. and Josephine Griswold Hoskins. He was raised in Tama and graduated from South Tama High School with the Class of 1977. Following high school he attended Iowa State University and later received an AA degree in Business Administration from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. He moved to Algona and worked for the Keleher-McAdams Clothing Store. While living in Algona he met Brenda Carter and the two were united in marriage on September 17, 1983. The couple moved to Toledo and purchased Dwight's Clothing Store. Tom relocated to store to downtown Grinnell and the family moved to Grinnell in 1998. Tom was always concerned about caring for the elderly so he returned to school at DMACC and received a degree in nursing home administration. He worked as an administrator at Grinnell Health Care Center, formerly Friendship Manor and Grandview Heights in Marshalltown before moving to Cedar Rapids. At the time of his death was the Administrator of Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Rapids. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Hoskins of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Reed (Elizabeth) Hoskins of La Crosse, WI and Neal (Sally) Hoskins of Coralville, IA; one granddaughter, Haylee Hoskins; one "adopted" son, Roshan (Archana) Shrestha of Chicago, IL; one brother, Tim (Jill) Hoskins of Norwalk, IA; and one sister, Tobi Cunningham of Ankeny, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
