Tim Hoien, 71, of Brooklyn, died on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment with military rites will be at Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Michael J. Manatt Community Center in Brooklyn.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm on Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and Tim's family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Memorials may be designated to the Tim Hoien Memorial Fund to benefit local organizations and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with Tim's family online at www.smithfh.com.
Timothy Allan Hoien was born the son of Russell and Jeanette (Huntley) Hoien on June 4, 1951 in Estherville, IA. He was raised near Ringsted until 9th grade, when the family moved to Malcolm, IA. He graduated from BGM High School in Brooklyn with the class of 1969. Following his education, Tim honorably served in the United States Army.
Tim returned home from the service and began working at the elevator in Malcom. He was blessed with two children, Amy and T.J. prior to his marriage to Rhonda Read in 1986. The couple were blessed with two more children, Jessie and Cody, and farmed together near Brooklyn, IA until Rhonda's passing in 1998. Tim was later married to Kristina Helleso in 2012 and the couple resided near Holiday Lake and enjoyed countless motorcycle and truck rides together.
Tim worked alongside his life-long friend Ron Puls as an auto mechanic for many years. Tim operated a trucking business and freight brokerage service. Kenworth trucks were one of Tim's passions and he owned many throughout the years . He served on the Malcom Fire Department for several years. Tim's enjoyments included riding and working on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, working on old cars, and playing music. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, dad jokes, his love of music, and for being a wonderful and loving husband and great friend to many.
Tim is survived by his wife, Kristina Hoien of Brooklyn; his children, Amy (Chad) Larson of Brooklyn, T.J. (LeAnn) Hoien of Reinbeck, IA, Jessie (Ryan) Roudabush of Farmington, MN, and Cody (Paige) Hoien of San Diego, CA; grandchildren Dylan Eichhorn and Jackson Eichhorn and Laina Hoien; great grandchildren Aleeah and Briggs Eichhorn; and his siblings, Tom (Mary) Hoien of Columbia, MO, and Teresa (Tracey Rothenberger) of Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents.
