Thomas Dean Walter, 63, of Grinnell, IA passed away June 25, 2024 at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2024, both at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Kelli Walter for a future dedication, mailed in c/o Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.

Tom was born on November 16, 1960 to Joseph and Neoma (Christenson) Walter in Albert Lea, Minnesota. In the early 1970s, Tom's family moved to Grinnell. He then graduated with the Grinnell High School class of 1979.

Tom was united in marriage to Kelli McNurlen on October 11, 1980 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. The couple had three children together; Tobbie, Jess and Andy.

Tom was a Master Carpenter, working as a Superintendent overseeing commercial projects throughout his career. He was a member of the Carpenters Local 106 Union, and enjoyed wood working, working on cars, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

He is survived by his wife, Kelli; his children, Tobbie Walter (Jed Van Zante) of Chicago, IL, Jess (Ryan) Gersdorf of Grinnell, IA and Andy (Ashley) Walter of Victor, IA; his grandchildren, Michelle Burkett, Stella and Axl Gersdorf, and Dawson Walter; his siblings, Beth (Dana) Glasnapp, Sue Walter, and Cindy (Kenny) Juhl.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, Tilford and Viola Christenson, and his in-laws, Dennis and Jo McNurlen.
