Obituary

Thelma E. Hadley, age 95, of The Woodlands, Texas and formerly of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Brookdale of The Woodlands, Texas. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 8, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Todd Follette, Grinnell Friends Church, officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be designated to the Grinnell Friends Church or to the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared online with the family at www.smithfh.com. Thelma was born the daughter of William and Grace (Davis) Johnson on April 24, 1920, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1938. She was united in marriage to Corwin Owen Hadley on August 14, 1938, in Grinnell. To this union were born their children William, Donna, Steven and Marcia. She and Corwin purchased a farm in New Providence, Iowa, and lived there most of their lives. She was a member of Honey Creek - New Providence Friends Church and the First Friends Church in Grinnell. In church she was very active in United Society of Friends, Sunday School, and Bible School. She was a member of the New Providence Music Art and Drama club. She was an avid reader, enjoyed Bridge and 500, loved to bake and was a very good seamstress. Music was a big part of family life and she played the piano by ear. In later years, she and Corwin enjoyed special friendships and playing golf. Thelma is survived by her four children, William (Barb) of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Donna (Byram) Vigars of Princeton, Illinois, Steven (Elaine) of Spring, Texas and Marcia (Wally) of Spring, Texas; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and a sister, Maxine Strawser of Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Corwin; her granddaughter, Haley Elizabeth; four sisters; and two brothers.
