Steve Schmidt, 67, died August 17, 2021 at UnityPoint Taylor House in Des Moines, IA. Steve was born to Eileen (Terpestra) and Ward Schmidt on January 28, 1954 in Grinnell, IA and grew up with his brothers Terry and Tom. He attended Grinnell-Newburg School and graduated from high school in 1972. After graduation he attended Ellsworth Community College. His daughter, Brittany, was born on February 13, 1987 from his first marriage. Steve was united in marriage to Carol Dayton on October 27, 2001 in Grinnell and moved to Ankeny; living there for the past 22 years. He worked as a finance professional within the auto industry including, Wes Finch Auto, Universal Underwriters and other Central Iowa auto dealerships.
Steve was an avid golfer playing many rounds with his Grinnell and Ankeny friends. He was excited to enter "the hole in one club" in 2020 at Toad Valley in Altoona IA, par 3 number 16 with a 5 wood. He loved spending time with Carol and his girls, along with many other friends and family; golfing, playing cards, traveling, and watching many sporting events involving the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, PGA golf tournaments, and the Triple Crown horse races. Steve's neighborhood friends (the hood) in Ankeny were a part of Steve's life and many memories were created with them. He enjoyed gambling at the casino and betting on horse races. He seemed to have lady luck on his side quite often. Steve had a sweet tooth for chocolate and Peanut M&Ms, and could be found sneaking into candy jars to satisfy this love for chocolate.
Welcoming him into heaven are his parents, sister-in-law Marilyn Schmidt and brother-in-law Jim Dayton.
Surviving are his wife Carol, children Brittany (Chris) Ring of Marshalltown, IA, Ali Clendenen and Annie Clendenen (Brandon Dolin) of Ankeny, brothers Terry Schmidt (Connie Locker) of Grinnell IA and Tom (Diana) Schmidt of San Antonio TX. Nieces Suzanne (Randy) Scdoris of Lincoln NE and Lori (Ken) Madison of Monett, MO. Great nieces and nephews Brandon (Marisa) Scdoris, Jared Scdoris, Nicholas Madison and Brooke Madison. And many Dayton family in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Steve's family would like to thank the UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center staff for recent care provided to Steve.
