Steven was born in Marshalltown, IA, the first child of Gordon and Alicemary Waltz Borthwick. He attended schools in Marshalltown. Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Marshalltown. Memorials ma be directed to American Cancer Society. Steven participated in YMCA swim team as well as the Marshalltown High School swim team. But his passion was bicycle racing. During his teen years Steve competed in bicycle races throughout Iowa. Steven's passion for bicycling continued the rest of his life. He was especially proud of the bicycle frames that Gordon built for him. Steven was generous with his time building bikes for his friends who lived in Milwaukee. For a time, Steve lived in California – working with a music group, setting up their sound system. From there he moved to Austin, Texas where he could bike year-round. Eventually he relocated to Milwaukee where he was employed with an Iranian carpet company. His deliveries took him all over the US. Steven's most recent employment was as a manager of an apartment house in South Milwaukee. He was happiest as his own boss, taking care of screening the applicants who lived there and in keeping the building up to code. His last adventure in May 2021 was to take John and Diane to the Velodrome in Kenosha to watch a friend race around the track. Steven's goal was to get in shape to do that himself. It never happened. He was gone two weeks later. Pancreatic cancer is a silent killer, and it came so quickly. Steven had a great sense of humor and had an optimistic outlook on life. We are comforted that he is at peace. Steven was preceded in death by his father, Paul Gordon Borthwick and an infant brother Paul Griffith Borthwick. He is survived by his mother, Alicemary Borthwick of Grinnell, a brother John (Diane) Borthwick of Clinton, MO, a sister Karen (David) Campbell of Independence, MO, a nephew Sean (Corinne) of Switzerland, and a niece Kathryn Weaver of Minneapolis, MN.
