Stanley S. Walford, age 100, of Brooklyn, passed away Wednesday, September 23rd, 2026, at Mayflower Nursing Home in Grinnell, IA.

Stanley was born in the family home on December 19, 1925, to Bert Nathan Walford and Eva Mamie (Shuler) Walford. He graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1944, and was drafted into WWII in June, 1944. After basic training in Texas, he was shipped on the Queen Mary to Europe. He was honorably discharged and returned home in June of 1946.

Stanley was united in marriage to Kathleen Phyllis Roth on July 29, 1946, at St. Patrick’s Rectory in Brooklyn. They were married for 75 years, till Kay’s passing on May 23, 2023. They are survived by their five children, David (Anne) Walford of Grinnell, Mark (Joan) Walford of Glencoe, MN, Jeanne (Tom) Hollopeter of Grinnell, Mary ( Lee) Ohler of Brooklyn, and Jennifer Bidler of Ankeny; eight grandchildren, Lukas (Alyssa) Walford, Jakob Walford, Kristin (Jeremy) Kahout, and their mother Deb Walford, Heather Hollopeter, Lisa Hollopeter, Amy (Nick) Arens, Megan (Nivek) Kautzer, and Olivia Ohler; twelve great-grandchildren, Charles and Margaret Walford, Oliver and Nelson Walford, Emma, Brooke, and Jessa Kahout, Chryton, Graydon, and Daxtyn Arens, Hailey, Henry and Peyton Kautzer.

Stanley was proceeded in death by his wife, Kathleen (Kay), his parents, Bert and Eva Walford, his sister Pauline Cram and brother Darwin.

Stanley worked for the REC in Brooklyn as a lineman for many years. He was also an active part of the community, as a Boy Scout Leader, on the Camp Fire board, on the Brooklyn Library board and also the library handyman for several years, a member of Kiwanis, a Lay Minister for the Brooklyn Grace United Methodist Church, and also the janitor and handyman after his retirement from the REC. He was also a member of Brooklyn Grace United Methodist Church for 93 years, and an 80-year member of the American Legion Francis Gallagher Post #294. Stanley was honored as being the Grand Marshall of the 2026 Brooklyn Flag Festival and awarded a plaque by the American Legion. They had never awarded this for an 80-year member achievement before. At the time of his death, he was the oldest WWII Vet in Poweshiek County. Throughout his life he always worked, whether it was cutting down trees, trimming bushes, pouring new sidewalks or tearing down houses or barns. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, Hawkeye football, and making wine.

Stanley donated his body to science at the University of Iowa. There will be a celebration of life service on Saturday, October 10th at 10:00 am at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. A meal will be served following the service in the fellowship hall located in the basement of the church.
