Obituary

Shirley Anne Jurgensen, 86, of Monett, Missouri and formerly of Grinnell died on August 20, 2021 at Lacoba Nursing Home in Monett. A graveside service and burial has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 2nd, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. A memorial gathering in Shirley's memory will be held at the Grinnell Eagles Club beginning at 3:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Visitation with the Jurgensen family will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1st, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be designated to Poweshiek Animal League (PALS) and mailed to the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Shirley was born on June 29, 1935, in Kellogg, the daughter of Marion "Cotton" and Florence Beason Gibson. She was raised in Grinnell and attended school there. On August 15, 1953, she was united in marriage with Paul Jurgensen, in Tama; a union of 59 years! The couple lived in Iowa, Minnesota, and Oklahoma before moving to Grinnell in 1969. Shirley was employed at several places in Grinnell including, Wayne's Steak House, American Legion Hall, the Eagles Club, and John & Gary's Game Time. She was a member of the Grinnell American Legion Auxiliary, and both the Grinnell and Tama Eagles Club. Shirley enjoyed socializing with family and friends, fishing and camping at Diamond Lake, flowers, and birdwatching. Her pugs were the love of her life. She held a passion for music and dancing, and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. She held a deep love for her family and enjoyed sharing her time with her grandchildren; Sunday family dinners were always a joy for her. Survivors include her children, Connie Jurgensen of Monett, Missouri, Jackie (Larry) Ites of Alden, Jim Jurgensen of Sully, Randy Jurgensen of Grinnell, and Beth Anne Jurgensen of Barnes City; one brother, Gary Gibson of Grinnell; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on October 18, 2012; her parents; one daughter, Becky Jurgensen; one brother, Chip Gibson; two grandchildren, Jason Hotchkin and Sumer Jurgensen; and two great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Knox and William Hotchkin.
