Obituary

Ruth Packard, 101, of Grinnell died Monday, November 29, 2004, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center. A memorial service for Mrs. Packard will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 3, at the Mayflower Home Carman Center with Rev. Del Dawes, retired of Grinnell, officiating. Pianist will be Pat Saxton. Burial will be held at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed towards the Mayflower Home Human Needs Fund or Grinnell United Methodist Church for organ music. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements. The daughter of John Edwin and Lulu Stella Woodworth Hathaway, she was born October 29, 1903, in Sioux City. She was raised in Sioux City and was a 1922 graduate of Sioux City Central High School. She attended Morningside College and later received a degree in music at Rockford College, Rockford, Illinois. She was married to Bruce Gordon Packard October 4, 1928, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in several cities throughout the Midwest, while he was employed as a civil engineer for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. The couple retired to Door County, Wisconsin and for many years wintered in Mission, Texas. They moved to the Mayflower Home in Grinnell in 1986. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and a 50 year member of the Rose Croix Chapter 400 Order of Eastern Star in Sioux City. She was also very active at the Mayflower Home. Survivors include three children, Patricia Yungclas and Rev. B. Gordon Packard, both of Grinnell, and Alan Packard of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Harold L. Hathaway; and one great-grandchild, Karen Rose Johnson.
