Roger D. Stewart, 80, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A memorial gathering will be held 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Should friends desire, memorials in Roger's name may be directed to PALS and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Roger was born August 8, 1936, in Grinnell, Iowa to Delmar and Mae Larsen Stewart. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1954. Following high school he worked for the Smith Funeral Home assisting with ambulance and funeral work. Roger was united in marriage to Janice Breckenridge on November 30, 1957 at the Kellogg Christian Church. The couple lived in Grinnell and he was associated with the General Telephone Company of the Midwest for over 35 years in various departments. He retired in 1988, and worked part-time for Schoen Construction Company as well as other area businesses. Roger was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge and the Hermon Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed NASCAR, playing cards at the Elks Lodge, attending racing events at Knoxville and working on the chain gang at Grinnell High School football games. His family was very important to him and he treasured time spent with them. Survivors include his two sons, Stan (Roxanna) Stewart of Grinnell and Robert (Diane) Stewart of Urbandale; and four grandchildren, Derek and Meghan Stewart, both of Grinnell and Natalie and Jackson Stewart, both of Urbandale. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; and his parents.
