Robert N. Thompson, age 82, of Grinnell and formerly of Gilman, died on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. David Easley officiating. Interment with military rites will be in Westfield Cemetery south of Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday and the family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Bob was born on May 24, 1929 in Grinnell, Iowa to George and Nettie Drake Thompson. He was raised near Grinnell and he attended Frog Pond country grade school near Lynnville, Iowa. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953 during the Korean Conflict. On December 17, 1955 he was united in marriage to Marilyn "Jean" Schumann in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The couple lived in Marshalltown, Laurel, and later moved south of Grinnell before retiring in Gilman. He worked at Lennox Foundry in Marshalltown and later farmed south of Grinnell and also worked at Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg. He began working for the City of Gilman in 1974 and retired in 1992. Bob enjoyed hunting in his younger days and especially enjoyed a good cup of coffee with his friends or anyone who wanted to sit and visit. His faith and his family were most important to him. Bob is survived by his daughters, Vickie Thompson of Powell, Ohio and Sammi (Kelly) Bryan of Lynnville, Iowa; 2 grandchildren, Brooke Bryan and Dallas Bryan, both of Lynnville; one great granddaughter, Sawyer Osborn of Lynnville; one sister, Ann Schuele of Maryville, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn "Jean" Thompson on September 19, 2011; and his brother, Lowell Thompson.
