Robert M. Samson, 94, of Grinnell, IA passed away May 2, 2023 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

Burial will follow the visitation at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Memorials may be designated to the St. Francis Manor Foundation in c/o of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.

Robert (Bob) was born on April 20, 1929, in Onawa, Iowa, to Wayne Eugene and Ellen Eureka (Johnson) Samson. Bob was raised in Onawa graduating with the class of 1947. Following high school, he attended the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines and shortly after, took his first job in the banking industry at the Onawa State Bank. In 1951-52 he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Following his service, he returned to the Onawa State Bank while simultaneously studying and graduating from the Wisconsin School of Banking. In 1964 Bob took a role with the Grinnell State Bank where he remained until his retirement in 1997.

On December, 28, 1952, he was united in marriage to Ruth Carlson in Onawa. To this union the couple had four children; Chris, Doug, Suellen and Tracy. The family moved to Grinnell in 1964, where they raised their family living on Manor Drive, Broad Street, Country Club Drive and Maple Street (Seeland Park). Bob was very active in the community holding various roles with the Red Cross, United Way, Lions Club and Grinnell Country Club. He was also active with the Boy Scouts and Little League Baseball.

Bob will be remembered for his collections, especially his western art, and coin collections. He was also an artist who dabbled at landscapes. He enjoyed woodworking, and made many Disney characters for friends and family. Bob liked to golf, search for antiques, vintage car shows, snow-birding in Texas, Florida and California and visiting family around the country. He was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his children, Chris (Lisa) Samson of Urbandale, IA, Doug Samson of Durham, NC, Suellen Samson of Indianapolis, IN, and Tracy Boddicker of Berryville, VA; his grandchildren, Erin (Phillip) Ramsey, Megan Samson, Lauren Samson (Nick Onken), Kaylin (Ben) Fasig, Miles Hokanson, Adam (Kelly) Boddicker, Austin Boddicker, and Annie Boddicker; his great grandchildren, Larae Ramsey, Beckham Ramsey, Oakley Ramsey, Lillian Boddicker, Addison Boddicker, and Oliver Boddicker.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Don (Charlotte) Samson, sister Dorothy (Joe) Jackson and niece Laura Stanislav.
