Obituary

Robert Kriegel, 94, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell with Rev. Scott Foley presiding. Interment with military honors by the US Navy will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. A luncheon will be held at the Eagles in Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and the family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A scripture service and rosary will be held at 3:30 pm in the Heritage Room at the Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be designated to St. Mary Catholic Church or to the St. Francis Manor Foundation, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family online at www.smithfh.com. Robert Eugene Kriegel was born the son of Henry and Victorine (Fegal) Kriegel on May 8, 1927, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Brooklyn. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 – 1946 during World War II. On June 25, 1949, he was united in marriage to Billie Mae Niner, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn. The couple made their home in Grinnell, where together they raised their six children. Robert worked at Maytag in Newton, Iowa for nearly 38 years, retiring on May 30, 1987. Following his retirement, he worked for his daughter, Bobbie Heishman on their farm near Malcom for a few years and then worked at Bates Flowers in Grinnell for over 20 years. He was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a lifetime member of the UAW Local 997. His enjoyments included woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, the many Avon trips, and the time he spent with his family, especially his grandkids. Survivors include his six children, Roberta "Bobbie" (Ed) Heishman of Malcom, Mike (Cindy) Kriegel, Steve (Kathy) Kriegel, Sheriff, Tom (Karla) Kriegel, Jan (Jim) Graham, and Julia Kriegel, all of Grinnell; 18 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and his sister, Margaret Hill of Graeagle, California, and his sister-in-law, Delores Kriegel of Hartwick. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Billie Kriegel in 2020; and siblings, Lucille Heishman, Henry Kriegel, Bernard Kriegel, Thelma Turner, Nona Van Draksa, Marietta Crawford, and Larry Kriegel.
