Obituary

Robert was born on September 14, 1916, near Deep River, Iowa to James and Harriet Armstrong Gauley. He attended rural school and graduated from Deep River High School. Following high school he worked as a farmhand in the Deep River area and later in Illinois. During World War II he helped construct the Alcan Highway in Alaska and worked at a defense plant in Illinois. Robert lived in Grinnell and worked as a truck driver for the Cargil Seed Corn Company. He also helped build and deliver the children's trains and carousels for the Miracle Recreation Company in Grinnell. Following his retirement he was a small engine mechanic and repaired mopeds and golf carts. Robert was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and he enjoyed collecting and repairing cars and spending time at local casinos. He is survived by one son, Robert G. Gauley of Bloomington, IL; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Gauley of Grinnell; and four sisters, Clara McMeekin and Mildred King, both of Grinnell, Margaret Reid of Great Barrington, MA and Eunice Martin of Indianapolis, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Elmer Gauley. Memorials may be directed to PALS or to Grinnell Regional Hospice and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
