Richard Shuler, 95, of Kellogg, died on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 2:30 pm, Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman.
The family will receive friends at the visitation held prior to the service beginning at 1:30 pm.
Memorials may be designated to Wounded Warrior Project or to the University of Iowa Holden Cancer Center, and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with Richard's family online at www.smithfh.com.
Richard John Shuler was born the son of John and Elizabeth (Fredericks) Shuler on June 12, 1929 in Tama, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm near Gilman, Iowa and received his education at Gilman schools.
Richard honorably served in the United States Navy from 1950 – 1954 during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Lillian Alice Green on June 12, 1957 at the Gilman Community Church. They were blessed with three children: Michael, Michelle, and Mark. Richard farmed near Gilman for many years.
Richard was an outdoorsman who loved to farm the land. He held a strong love of his family and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him the greatest joy. His enjoyments included fishing, horseback riding, mowing the yard, going to dances with Tootie, and gardening.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Doug) Beals of Marshalltown; son, Mark Shuler of Kellogg; three grandchildren, Dan (Allie) Beals, Hailee Beals and Mason Shuler; three great-grandchildren, Ryker, Gabby, and Sylvia Beals; and his siblings, Darlene Galloway, Ronald Shuler, Roger Shuler, and Helen Hand. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice "Tootie" Shuler in 2017; son, Michael Shuler in 2015; and siblings, Harold Shuler (infancy), Kathy Shipley, Betty Stalzer, Gloria Westcott and Ronda Meyer.
