Richard "Dean" Fontinel, 87, of Victor, died on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 11, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor with Rev. Jim Davis, pastor of the Victor New Covenant Parish officiating. The family will be present one hour prior to the service; inurnment will be at the Victor Memorial Cemetery.
Dean was born on July 1, 1924 to Alfred and Laurabelle Carter Fontinel in Albia, Iowa. He was raised in several communities in the surrounding area, residing primarily in Victor.
Dean served in the United States Navy during World War II as a first class Seaman and he was stationed overseas throughout most of his military career. Following the war he returned to Victor and became associated with his father in the family business, Fontinel Produce. He later purchased and ran the business. When he sold the business, he joined Kinze Manufacturing in Marengo and worked as an assembly supervisor. He retired in 1980.
On August 13, 1979, he was united in marriage to Wilma "Jean" Mason in Leslie, Arkansas. Dean enjoyed traveling to California to visit his family and one of his most memorable trips was to Alaska after his retirement. He had a passion for hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Dean was a 65 year member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.
Dean is survived by his wife, Jean, of 32 years; three daughters, Kristie (Doug) Blesie of Florence, South Carolina, Joy (Dean) Dolmage of Victor, Iowa, and Laurie Chapman of Woodburn, Iowa; two sons, Thomas Fontinel of Victor, Iowa, and Timothy (Lisa) Fontinel of Blairstown, Iowa; Step-children, Douglas (Diane) Foxworthy of Hesperia, California, Karen (Damon) Lohry of Sioux City, Iowa, and Connie (Larry) Logeman of St. Cloud, Minnesota; three sisters, Dorothy Mohr of Peoria, Arizona, Betty (Dean) Dawson of Templeton, California, and Virginia Dennis of Glendale, California; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joan Reeves; and one brother and sister who died in infancy.
