Obituary

Richard D. Ebert, 78, of Grinnell died March 11, 2017, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 15th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Keith Morrison officiating. Organist will be Kathy Vander Ploeg. Pallbearers will be Glen Mikel, Jarrid Mikel, Justen Rice, Jeffrey Ebert, Dwight Laidig and Richard Weiss. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery, north of Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and where the family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Richard D. Ebert Memorial Fund. Richard was born August 24, 1938, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Fredrick H. and Bessie Gaugh Ebert. He was raised in Newburg and was a 1957 graduate of Newburg High School. On April 28, 1961, he was united in marriage with Carol Ann Sears at the Newburg Congregational Church. A union of 55 years! The couple lived in Newburg for several years while he was employed at Sutton's Gas Station. They later moved to Grinnell where he was employed at several businesses including, Goulds Feed Store, Dick's APCO Gas Station, Donaldson Company, Farmhand, Inc., United McGill and later with Hafkey Farms. During this time, he also worked on repairing anything and everything people needed done. Richard could often be found tinkering with things in his shop. He never quit welding work or building garages. He was known as a "jack of all trades and a master of all!" He enjoyed camping and tractor rides, and considered his favorite ride in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his granddaughter, Casey. He is survived by his wife, Carol of Grinnell; three children, Kevin Ebert, Jeffrey Ebert and Rhonda Bair, all of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Fritz Ebert; two sisters, Margie Wickliff and Mary Lou Mikel; and one great-grandchild, Taylor Rice.
