Raymond M. Schinckel, 78, of Grinnell died March 12, 2008, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with the Rev. William Reynolds officiating. Organist will be Hans F. DeVries accompianed by St. Mary's Choir. Pallbearers will be Dan Boyer, Mike Mesch, Fritz Oltrogge, Bob Pearce, Jon Peterson, and Ralph Van Soelen. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. The son of Remi and Celina DeClercq Schinckel, he was born June 30, 1929, on a farm near Montezuma. He was raised in the Malcom area and attended rural school near his home. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. After serving his country, he returned to the family farm near Malcom. On August 27, 1955, he was married to Eula Alexander, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell. The couple continued farming in the Malcom area and later moved to a farm near Kellogg in 1966. He retired from farming in 1978 and they moved to their current home on an acreage near Grinnell which he and his son David helped build. He drove a ready-mix truck for Manatts Inc. for 15 years and also did other construction work and then while semi-retired he continued working for Manatts in other capacities until 2006. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell. Ray enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping, and gardening. He also enjoyed family trips, attending the Iowa State Fair, and working on antique John Deere Tractors, which on occassion he liked to show in parades. Survivors include his wife, Eula of Grinnell; two children, Annette (Mike) Mittermeier of Urbandale and David (Linda) Schinckel of Grinnell; one sister, Germaine (Don) Purdum of Malcom; one brother, Marvin (Pauline) Schinckel of Hartwick; one granddaughter, Phoebe Mittermeier of Urbandale; one nephew; and several nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Albert.
