Obituary

Raymond 'Bill' Moore, 72, of Grinnell, died August 25, 2007, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 30th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Tim Stewart, pastor of the Grinnell First Baptist Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Failor, John Huth, Buford 'Red' Issac, Justin Montgomery, Jeffrey Moore, and Jeremy Stockdall. Honorary bearers will be Craig Adams, Lyle Davis, Ron Durr, Doyle Mikles, Lee Staroska, and Robert Weisskopf. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines. The son of Mose Abner and Gladys M. Freshour Moore, he was born November 26, 1934, in Mahaska County, northeast of New Sharon. He was raised in New Sharon and later Montezuma, where he also attended school. On July 20, 1956, he was married to Mary Joan Odom, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, and the couple lived in Grinnell. After her death in 1980, he was married to Virginia Irwin on May 29, 1981 in Grinnell. The couple continued living in Grinnell where he was employed with the City of Grinnell in the maintenance department and later as a painter for Grinnell College Building and Grounds. He retired from the college on September 28, 1984. Ray enjoyed attending flea markets and collecting things, particularly old tools, baseball cards, coins and stamps. He also enjoyed wood crafts, building model trucks, working in his yard and garden, and listening to country music. Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Grinnell; two children, Jeffrey A. Moore and Billie Jo Anderson, both of Cedar Rapids; two step-sons, Roger McDowell of Ely, Iowa and Rodney McDowell of Peoria, Arizona; one sister, Erma Curry of Grinnell; one brother, John Moore of Malcom; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.
