Randy G. Smith, 63, of Grinnell passed away on May 15, 2022, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Visitation with the Smith family is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. A private family graveside service will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Randy was born March 3, 1959, to Claude and Dorothy (Mauderly) Smith in Red Oak, Iowa. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1977, and then attended the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1981. Randy was united in marriage to Julie Monroe on August 5, 1978 in Ossian, Iowa. Upon graduating UNI, the couple resided in Nevada, Iowa while Randy worked at his father's grocery store, Smitty's. Randy worked with his dad for 6 years. In 1988, Randy and Julie moved to Grinnell after their purchase of McNally's. Randy owned and operated McNally's until his passing with Julie, but he referred to himself as the "Store Director." Randy was known for his sense of humor and his kindness. Randy and Julie raised their three children; Tyler, Travis and Troy, in Grinnell. Family was very important to Randy. He enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He was known for buying them toys and giving them rides on his lawnmower. Randy loved being outside and tending to his land, or what he called "Land Management." He also enjoyed his grand puppies, Aspen and Winston. Randy is survived by his wife Julie; three sons, Tyler (Fiona) Smith of Urbandale, Iowa, Travis (Sam) Smith of Grinnell, and Troy (Catherine Pearce) Smith of Chicago, Illinois; five grandchildren, Finn, and Mira of Urbandale, Theo, Nigel and Duncan of Grinnell; sister Lori (Mike) Van Wyk of Denver, Colorado; and brother Claude (Christie) Smith of Custer, South Dakota.
