Randall Lee Phipps was born on September 9, 1960 in Grinnell, Iowa to Raymond and Mary (Schultz) Phipps. He was welcomed to the family by two older siblings, Gary and Dianne. He was raised and educated in Grinnell.
Randy worked as a self-taught mechanic most of his life. He worked for Grinnell Firestone and Jim Puls Auto in Grinnell. He moved to Marshalltown and worked for Dennis Anderson, hanging drywall. He helped his friend, Shawn Anderson with his racecar at Marshalltown Speedway. He later opened his own repair shop, Randy's Auto in Marshalltown. He closed the shop when he was diagnosed with cancer. He recently had a stroke and developed a brain bleed, which took his life.
He enjoyed and treasured his family and friends; always helping anyway he was needed. He liked to joke around, loved his pets, and would always take in strays. He was a Kansas City Chiefs fan and loved to watch NASCAR races.
Randy is survived by his sister, Dianne Phipps of Grinnell; nephews, Tyler (Manda) Tuttle of Ledbetter, Texas and Jason McGilvrey of Grinnell; great nephew, Levi Tuttle; uncle, Richard Shaw of Garwin, IA; aunts, Betty Schultz of Greenfield, IA and Carolyn Dayton of Grinnell; and his good friend, Jennifer Anderson of Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, McKenzie Ray (stillborn); and his brother, Gary Phipps.
