Obituary

Randy "Fred" Garr, 62, of Fenton, Iowa and formerly of Grinnell died on February 16, 2021, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of life memorial gathering will be scheduled for a later date. Memorial contributions may be designated to the family of Randy Garr. Randy was born on February 25, 1958, in Grinnell, the son of Martin Edward and Mary Louise Arthur Garr. He was raised in Grinnell and near Rock Creek and was a 1976 graduate of Grinnell High School. After high school, he was self-employed and opened Rock Creek Cycle Repair. On August 2,1990, he was united in marriage with Denise Kay Black, in Chariton; a union of 30 years of loving companionship. The couple made their home in Fenton. Randy was an independent over-the-road truck driver for 30 years (1989 – 2019) and for much of this time Denise would help with the driving. He enjoyed his life on the road and especially his time shared with his wife while driving their semi. After his retirement from truck driving, he was employed with Snap-On Tools (2019 to present) in Algona. Randy's love and devotion for his wife and family was very evident. His love for Denise was profound and they were a great team together. His niece, nephews, and their children meant so much to him as if they were his own. He loved riding his Harley year-round, yes, winter, too! The couple enjoyed the "open roads" and had traveled to all 48 continental states, Hawaii, and three Canadian Provinces. He had hoped to visit Alaska in the near future and that would have finished off all 50 states. Randy is survived by his wife, Denise of Fenton; his step-son, Michael Murray of Algona; one niece, Molly (Dan) DeKorne of Tama; and four nephews, Luke (Rebecca) Bailey of Lynnville, Jake (Elizabeth) Bailey of Carroll, Ben (Elle) Bailey of Searsboro, and Hank (Emma) Bailey of Grinnell; one sister, Marla (Neil) Criswell of Titonka, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Mary Arthur Garr; and his sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Bill Bailey, both in 2019.
