Ramon D. Gruhn, 87, of Grinnell died on April 5, 2018, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center. A private family graveside service has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 11, at Rock Creek Cemetery, west of Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, April 10, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Ramon D. Gruhn Memorial Fund to be designated by family for local causes. Ramon was born on March 24, 1931, on the family farm near Malcom, the son of Lester Vinton and Leona Myrtle Coburn Gruhn. He attended Bear Creek #8 country school near Malcom and was a 1949 graduate of Kellogg High School. On April 11, 1953, he was united in marriage with Marilyn "Kay" McMannis, at the Methodist Church in Newton. Following his military service in the U.S. Army in Germany, Ramon and Kay began their farming operation in Rock Creek Township which continues today. Ramon was a steward of the land and strident about conservation practices. Farming was his life's calling. Ramon held a special interest in the activities of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and his wife had a profound influence on his life. He enjoyed traveling, and he and Kay took vacations throughout the continental U.S. Ramon is survived by his children, Cindy (Ron) Deppe of Grinnell, Pam (Bill Doud) Gruhn of Kellogg, Scott (Vicki) Gruhn of Grinnell, Brian (Michelle) Gruhn of Kellogg, and Kirk Gruhn of Kellogg; six grandchildren, Keri Carstens, Brent and Nathen Deppe, and Bradley, Brennan and Michael Gruhn; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kay on March 31, 2008; and three siblings, Dorothy Johnson, Harold Gruhn, in infancy, and Lucille Gruhn, in childhood.
