Pierce Comerford, 96, of Grinnell died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at his home.
A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with the Rev. William Reynolds officiating. Organist will be Marilyn Kriegel. Pallbearers will be Christopher and Samuel Comerford, John Devereux, Dave Gallagher, and Mark and Ron Schmitz. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or St. Mary's Catholic Church.
The son of Edward and Margaret Devereux Comerford, he was born October 7, 1909, in New Sharon. He made his home in Stuart for several years and then moved to a farm southwest of Grinnell. He attended Westfield Grant #9 rural school and was a 1927 graduate of St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport. Following his education he returned to Grinnell to help his family farm.
On February 4, 1937, he was married to Mary Schmitz at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell. The couple farmed in the Grinnell area for 36 years and moved to Grinnell in 1973. He then was employed at Wenco for several years.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and was active with Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Grinnell; one son and his wife, Tom and Mary Comerford of Miami, Florida; three grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, William Comerford in 1991; three brothers, William, Alex and Francis Comerford; and three sisters, Mary McGrory, Blanche Flanagan, and Sister Maurita Comerford.
