Phyllis Story, 69, of Kellogg, went to be with Jesus, March 11, 2012, at her home. A memorial service has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Grinnell Christian Church with the Pastor John Epperson, Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. Phyllis was born November 21, 1942, in Montezuma, Iowa, the daughter of Clovis and Josie Groves Johnson. She attended rural school in Missouri and later in Kellogg. On May 3, 1969, she was united in marriage to Roy Story, in Memphis, Missouri, and they made their home in Grinnell where they raised their two daughters. The couple remained close friends after their divorce. Phyllis was employed as a telephone operator at GTE for several years and later as a dietary aide at St. Francis Manor. She was very proud of her work at St. Francis and enjoyed caring for the elderly. She retired in 2005. She attended the Grinnell Christian Church and was an avid reader of Christian literature. She enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She held a passion for baking and everything she baked was made with love. She enjoyed attending auctions and collecting antiques, cleaning, and camping with her family. Anything to do with her children and grandchildren was very important to her. She was very proud of them. She never lost her smile! Survivors include two daughters, Heather (Corey) Barloon of Nevada, Iowa and Lori (Dan) Walker of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Andrew and Grace Barloon of Nevada and Blake and Tyler Walker of Grinnell; her special friend, Dale Lenz of Kellogg; her former husband, Roy Story of Grinnell; four brothers, Duane (Audrey) Johnson of Gilman, Oscar (Betty) Johnson of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Hanley Johnson of New Sharon and Perry (Marie) Johnson of Loveland, Colorado; and three sisters, Ilean Whitehead and Ava Jean (Delmar) Stone of New Sharon and Dixie (Gene) VerSteeg of Nashville, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Kelly James Allen; and an infant sister,¬ Cleda Yvonne Johnson.
