Obituary

Pauline Phipps, 84, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. The family will be present one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Pauline O. Phipps memorial fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Pauline was born north of Brooklyn, Iowa to Alan Paul and Jeanetta (Graham) Clayton on February 16, 1931. She attended Grinnell schools and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1948. On April 19, 1952, she was united in marriage to Dale Phipps in Lancaster, Missouri. To this union five children were born; Dale Jr., Jeanne, Miles, Delores and Charles. She was a member of the Madison Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Pauline enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and baking homemade bread. Apple or cherry pie was her favorite desserts. She will always be remembered for her Sunday dinners. Pauline liked watching the birds and squirrels through her window. Pauline loved her grandchildren and played a big part in their lives. She will be remembered by her children, Dale Phipps Jr. of Grinnell, Jeanne (Bob) Hunter of Searsboro, Miles Phipps of Grinnell, Delores "Dolly" (Wayne) Kinzebach of Barnes City and Charles Phipps of Grinnell; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; her sisters-in-law, Marge Clayton and Margaret Clayton, both of Grinnell and her brother-in-law, Richard Dean of Marshalltown. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1981, five brothers, Miles, Roger, Graham, Robert and Paul Clayton, one sister, Mary Dean and her special longtime friend, Paul Laverty.
