Paul McDonald, 79, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 21st at the Smith Funeral Home and his family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.

Paul Daniel McDonald was born the son of Ernest and Grace (Paul) McDonald on June 13, 1942, near Montezuma, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm near Newburg, Iowa, and later Grinnell. He attended country school near Grinnell and then Newburg School. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1960.
Paul was united in marriage to Penny Ellis on February 11, 1964, in Illinois. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Paul Scott McDonald. They resided in Grinnell all of their lives together and Paul was a longtime employee of the City of Grinnell as an assistant supervisor of the water department. Penny died on March 4, 2007. He was united in marriage to Irene Davidson on August 22, 2018, at the Christian Church in Grinnell.
Paul was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Grinnell, the Grinnell Christian Church, and the Moose Lodge in Newton. His enjoyments were attending dances, going to the annual Grinnell Fireman's breakfast, decorating his yard with lawn ornaments, and woodworking. He will be remembered for his kindness, for being a hard worker, and for being a talented woodworker.
Paul is survived by his wife, Irene McDonald of Grinnell; stepson, Eric (Alicia Krause) Davidson of Grinnell and their daughters, Carmela Davidson and Lilah Smith; siblings, Annabelle Downey of Ankeny, Iowa, Donna Strachota of Mason City, Iowa, Diane (Ron) Parker of Kensett, Iowa, Duane (Pam) McDonald of Grinnell, Marilyn Starnes of Grinnell, Ellen (Robert) McLain of Brooklyn, Iowa, Faye (Jim) Brown of Colfax, Iowa, Keith (Phyllis) McDonald of Baxter, Iowa, Roger McDonald of Newton, Iowa, Wesley McDonald of Missouri, Dean McDonald of Grinnell, and Henry McDonald of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death his parents; wife, Penny McDonald; son, Paul Scott McDonald; and siblings, Charles McDonald, Dorothy Rhinehart, and Kenneth McDonald, who died in infancy.
