Paul L. Elliott, age 89, of Grinnell, died on Friday, March 30, 2012 at his home with his family by his side. A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 2, 2012 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Don Johnston officiating. Pallbearers are his sons, Charles, Dennis, Dwaine, Ed, Gary and Ralph. Honorary bearers are Dan & Linda Dannar,Tim Elliott, Patrick Elliott, Nick Elliott, Robbie Douglas, Merle, Mark and Jason Fiser, Dan Grandstaff, and John Van Cleve. Interment will be in Rock Creek Cemetery near Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family being present to greet friends from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the Calvary Baptist Church or to Grinnell Regional Hospice, sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Paul LaVern Elliott was born to Homer and Ethel (Goldsmith) Elliott on January 21, 1923, in a rural farm house south of Akron, Colorado. When Paul was two years old the family moved back to Iowa and lived in the Rock Creek area. He attended country school near in the Rock Creek Township. Paul worked for various area farmers with the desire and dream to someday own his own place. On June 4, 1944, Paul married the love of his life, Edna Kimball, at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell. One of their first homes was in the Lynnville area. Paul continued to farm and milk cows while raising his family. He later moved into his family home near Rock Creek that had been built by his grandfather and great grandfather. In 1973, Paul and Edna's dream of owning their own farm came true. They bought a 160 acre farm east of Grinnell that was set up with a dairy barn. Paul farmed until his retirement in 1980 and then went into partnership with his son Dennis, operating Elliott Construction Company until 1996. His family, faith and farming were most important to him. Music was also a big part of Paul's life. He enjoyed playing guitar and fiddle after a long day in the field. Paul had been a member of the Calvary Baptist Church since the early 1950's and he looked forward to each Sunday morning. He was a quiet man with kind words and a quick sense of humor and was always there to help when help was needed or just to listen when you needed someone to talk to. Paul will be greatly missed by his children: Gary (Carol) Elliott of Grinnell, Chuck (Carol) Elliott of Athens, TN, Dennis (Lesley) Elliott of Grinnell, Linda (Dan) Dannar of Akron, CO, Dwaine (Laura) Elliott, Ralph (Lori) Elliott of Grinnell, and Eddy (Heidi) Elliott of Rochester, MN; one brother Delbert (Marilyn) Elliott of Florida, one sister- in-law, Joyce Abarr Elliott of Grinnell; and many, many grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, as well as friends and church family. Paul was preceded in death by his wife Edna in 2004; one infant daughter, Betty Joyce in 1956; his parents; two sisters, Dorothy (Shirley) Sisco and Marjorie Huff; three brothers, Raymond, Hollis (Addie), and Kenneth; two grandsons in infancy; and two great granddaughters.
