Obituary

Patricia May Shipton Anderson, 77, of Grinnell and formerly of Ames, died Sunday November 20, 2005, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell with her daughter at her side. She had suffered with ill health for many years. A graveside service and burial has been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell, South Dakota with the Rev. Hank Kor, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Red Cross. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell are handling arrangements. Pat was born in Mitchell, South Dakota on May 21, 1928, to George W. and Cora Westerberg Shipton. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell where she met her husband, Clark W. Anderson. They married on July 19, 1948, in Thermopolis, Wyoming. They had three children, Lynn Dee, Troy Michael and Cassandra Jane. They suffered the great loss of their two older children to Cystic Fibrosis in 1960 and 1961. After living in South Dakota and New Mexico, they finally settled in Ames in the early 1960's. While in Ames, she was a homemaker and was a volunteer for numerous organizations including, MICA, the PTA, and American Red Cross. Her work with the Red Cross spanned from the 1960's through the 1990's, including serving on the South Dakota and Iowa board of directors. She was also a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was employed in the toy department at Nims Sportsman's Store in Ames and later as a pharmacy technician at the Ames Wal-mart Store. She retired and moved to Grinnell in 1994, to be close to her family. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Cassie and Mike Wherry of Grinnell; one grandson, Mitchell Wheery of Grinnell; and a cousin, Roger Westerberg of Faith, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents and two children, Lynn Dee and Troy Michael Anderson.
