Pat Schmidt, 89, of Grinnell, died on Friday, May 24, 2024, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, May 30, 2024, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. A luncheon will follow in the Parish Center at St. Mary Catholic Church.

The family will receive friends at the visitation held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 29th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

Patsy Jo Ann Dempsey was born on August 2, 1934 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to Ralph and Mildred (Berggren) Dempsey. She was raised in Long Prairie and Waseca, Minnesota, and graduated from Waseca High School.

Pat was united in marriage to Gerald Schmidt on June 25, 1955 in Waseca. The couple was blessed with four children: Scott, Wendy, Lori, and Stacie. They moved to Grinnell, Iowa in October of 1961 and they operated P&J Saw and Splice together from 1984 - 1997. They were longtime members of St. Mary Catholic Church, where Pat served on the Altar and Rosary Society and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.

Pat's faith and her family were always foremost. She volunteered countless hours at St. Mary Catholic Church. Her enjoyments were sewing, gardening, watching professional golf on TV, attending card parties, and most recently, watching Caitlin Clark play basketball.

Pat is survived by her children, Scott (Laurie) Schmidt of Grinnell, Lori Schmidt of Grinnell, and Stacie (Jennifer) Hirakawa of Winterset, IA; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Mildred (Berggren) Dempsey; two sisters in infancy; husband, Gerald Schmidt in 2005; and a daughter, Wendy Schmidt in 1983.
