Obituary

Opal E. Duncan, 88, of Grinnell died August 8, 2010, at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn, Iowa. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 13, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Walt Claussen, pastor of the Newburg-Chester Congregational church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Chris, Jeremy, and Steve Duncan, Mike Henry, Phil Lender, and Lisa Morgan. Honorary bearers will be Tami Andreassen, Joe Appleby, Cheri Crum, Dan and Greg DeHoedt, Bill Henry, Lori Powers, Elizabeth and Wesley Smith, Jo-Cindy White, and Heather Young. Burial will be in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Opal E. Duncan Memorial Fund. Opal was born January 18, 1922, in Deep River, Iowa, the daughter of Christopher J. and Dorothy Martin Lender. She was raised and attended school in Montezuma. On December 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Clarence 'Rollie' Duncan in Oskaloosa. The couple lived in the Grinnell area and she was employed as a unit secretary at Grinnell General Hospital. She retired from the hospital in 1985 and then for several years she was employed at the Four Winds Motel in Grinnell. Opal enjoyed embroidering and cross stitching, gardening and flowers, and was an avid reader. Survivors include her children, Faye Smith of Waterloo, Lucy DeHoedt of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Robert (Donna) Duncan of Watauga, Texas, Deb (Ed) Dursky of Ottumwa, Duane (Taka) Duncan of Okinawa, Barbara Duncan of Richman, California, Rick Duncan of Hudson, Wisconsin, and Vicki (Ben) Smith of Chicopee, Massachusetts; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Ollie Duncan and Ruth Henry; one son, Jim Duncan; four sisters, Melissa Mitchell, Lois Stag, Mary Bortell, and Minnie Forbes; and one brother, Martin Lender.
