Obituary for Earl Phillip Heishman

Earl P. Heishman, 95, of Grinnell died on May 17, 2018, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22nd, at the Sheridan United Methodist Church, rural Poweshiek County, with Rev. Len Garrison, officiating. Organist will be Peggy Parker. Pallbearers will be Jocelyn Jones, Jeffrey Lewis, Mary Ann Hatlestad, Carrie Fank, Ross Brauer and Larry Heishman. Burial with military rites will be at the Sheridan Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 21st at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sheridan United Methodist Church.
Earl was born on August 25, 1922, on the family farm near Malcom, the son of Lester and Louise Kellogg Heishman. He was raised in the Malcom area and attended school in the Malcom School District.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army Corps, 32nd Fighter Squadron.
On June 15, 1942, he was united in marriage with Mary “Elaine” Lidtka, in Los Angeles, California. The couple lived in California and following his military Honorable discharge in 1946, they returned to Iowa and farmed for many years in the Sheridan Township. After retirement they lived at Seeland Park in Grinnell.
Earl was a life-long member of the Sheridan United Methodist Church, a 50+ year member of the Grinnell American Legion, Grinnell Elks Lodge #1266, Grinnell Eagles Club and the Sheridan and Sonora Granges.
Earl held a strong passion for farming and he knew the value of hard-work while running a successful farm operation. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and tending to his flower gardens. He loved his roses! He enjoyed traveling throughout the western states of America and he loved the mountains of Colorado. He and Elaine enjoyed attending weekend dances in the area.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra (Terry) Lewis of Grinnell and Denise (Dave) Brauer of Littleton, Colorado; five grandchildren, Jocelyn Jones, Jeffrey Lewis, Mary Ann Hatlestad, Carrie Fank and Ross Brauer; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Floyd (Janyce) Heishman of Grinnell and Clinton (Betty) Heishman of Grinnell; three sisters, Bernice Sleeuwenhoek of Grinnell, Dorothy (Russell) Stoker of Grinnell and Sally (Ray) Douglas of Bettendorf; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine in 2010; and one brother, Lyle Heishman.
