Obituary for Gerald Dee Carpenter

Gerald D. Carpenter, 89 of Des Moines and formerly of Grinnell died peacefully on March 23, 2018, at the Veterans Hospital Hospice in Des Moines under hospice care.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 26th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. David Crow, Pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Pallbearers are Jacob, Michael, Seth, Jessie and Ben Carpenter, and John German. Burial with military honors will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Gerald was born April 6, 1928, the son of Frank and Alvena Schultz Carpenter of rural Malcom. He was a 1945 graduate of Grinnell High School. After high school he worked at Rudkin Hatchery in Grinnell.

Gerald was united in marriage with Phyllis Ann Oaks of Des Moines, in 1950. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany with the 321st Signal Corp Battalion during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged from the Army returning to Grinnell and eventually became the owner of Rudkin Hatchery in 1953.

Gerald began work with General Telephone Company in 1963. He enjoyed employment there until 1973 when he and Phyllis purchased a small communications company in Des Moines. They moved to Des Moines in 1976. Gerald retired in 1983 to enjoy family and friends.

Gerald was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Elks Lodge where he was past Exalted Ruler, and was a Cub Scout Den Leader, Pack #347 and #313.

During retirement Gerald and Phyllis enjoyed traveling to most Iowa Hawkeye Football home games. They could usually be found at their favorite tailgating spot for both pre and post-game celebrations. Highlighting their travel were trips to Hawkeye football games and a few trips to Hawaii.

Their marriage was blessed with four sons, Joel (Terri) Carpenter, Jeffrey (Peggy) Carpenter, Jon (Ruth) Carpenter and Jason Carpenter (Kelli Joelson). They have 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis and sons, Joel, Jeffrey and Jason. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings; as well as his son, Jon and granddaughter, Cara Carpenter.
