Mattie was born on May 25, 1933, in Springdale, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Lura Hartsock Stagg. She graduated from Solon High School in 1951.

On April 16, 1955, she was united in marriage with Gordon Lewis, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple farmed for many years, including near Kelley, Madrid, Solon and Mt. Vernon. In 1973, they farmed near Searsboro prior to moving to Lynnville in 1997. Gordon was the love of her life.

Mattie enjoyed her life on the farm and raising her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to her and she enjoyed attending their activities. For many years, she and Gordon camped at the fairgrounds during the Iowa State Fair and developed many friendships while there. In 1984, while at the fair, Mattie won a cruise… She and Gordon liked it so much they eventually went on 3 more. They enjoyed traveling. She held a love for music, and enjoyed cooking and gardening. Her passions included sewing, knitting, quilting and crocheting. She made many clothes for her daughter, as a child, as well as dolls and cloth rabbit dolls. Mattie was always laughing and she liked to have fun. Some would say she was very ornery.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon of Lynnville; her daughter, Jean (Greg Blom) Lewis of Lynnville; two grandchildren, Crystal (Darren) Stein of Garrison and Trisha (Tim) Quinn of O’Fallon, Missouri; four great-grandchildren, Parker and Landen Stein and Connor and Delaney Quinn; and her siblings, Margaret Seebeck of Tipton, Kathleen Murray of Berryville, Arkansas, Donald Stagg (friend, Marilyn) of Cedar Rapids, Leslie Stagg of Nisswa, Minnesota and Wayne (Nancy) Stagg of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Lura Stagg; her son, Gordon Lewis in 1996; her grandson, Devon Lewis in 2006; and siblings, Elsie Sword, Ruth Beranek, Keith Stagg, Billy Stagg, Howard Stagg, Marilyn Rouner, Kay Blink and Carol Ann Neitderhisar.
